Mount bromo is a part of mount tengger. At 2,329 m (7,641 tf) above sea level. Mount  bromo is an active somma volcano, famous for its incredible nature and unique natural phenomena. The Mountain is located in East Java offering the natural beauty of their landscape. Mount Bromo is located in a sand plain or sea of sand around 10 km, and is surrounded by several other volcanoes. Mount bromo Comes from Mount tengger, which is the largest and the highest mountain in east java. Then Mount tengger erupted and create 4 new mountains, there are mount watangan, Mount  kursi, Mount batok and Mount Bromo. From several mountains, only Mount bromo is an active volcano, and the famous one The name of mount Bromo comes from javanese language “Brahma” or the creation of hinduism.

Administratively bromo located in 4 areas, there probolinggo regency, malang regency, lumajang regency, and pasuruan regency. The Main Thing You should Do In Bromo

Enjoy sunrise from view point

Sunrise Point only takes about  30 minutes From The parking jeep. Before the sun rises, you must have a coffee break, no need to worry. Sunrise view points have several parts, like penanjakan(The highest view point, 2.770 m), kingkong hill, and sunrise Love hill. all of the spots have a good view. You also can see the highest Mountain in east Java called Mount Semeru  from all the spots.

The sun is rising at 05.30 am and if you arrive earlier, no worry you still have a coffee/tea time before reaching the view points and enjoy the sunrise. The best month for Bromo sunrise is starting from July to August as it is summer in Indonesia.

Enjoy riding with the Jeep Bromo

If you are visiting in the high season you have to wake up early, because a lot of jeeps go up in a single road to the view point and sometimes it makes a traffic jam in the mountain. As a fact, Bromo area has been covered by 4 regencies such as Malang, Pasuruan, Probolinggo and Lumajang. All those areas where all those jeeps coming from (about 1,200 units of Jeeps in total go to the view point).

There are 4 view points such as; Love Hill, Kingkong Hill, Mt. Prau and Pananjakan Mountain. All those jeeps will park nearby of each view point as requested where you wish. But sometimes the jeep is taking a little bit far away from the spot if they are coming late and they don’t have any parking space near the view point. Consequently, you have to take a walk and it can be 100 meters or more. 

After enjoying the sunrise, head back to the jeep, time for hiking to the Bromo Crater. Bromo hiking is not too hard, you can be done around 20 minutes from the parking area. The distance is about 1.5 km, with smooth Trekking. You can ride horses or walk. you will pass through the sand plain, and also there is a temple called pura luhur poten. This is a place for hindu worship. continue hiking until you find around 250 stairs, and you are on the top of the bromo crater. The bromo crater has a unique characteristic, smoky, and  is typically smelly of sulphur.

Camping at Bromo

You also can camp at mount bromo. Mount bromo is not identically with the sunrise but also offering sunset panoramic view. Waiting for the sunset and having a cup of coffee with the incredible landscape of Mount Bromo, Mount Batok and mount Semeru as the background of the Bromo mountain range from Prau hill will give you another experience.   • Ceremony to the God, under foot of Mount Bromo

Meanwhile, the mountain and natural beauty are also offering unique attractive of cultural diversity. Tengger ethnic, the original ethnic that live around the tengger area. They are rich in culture and tradition. They annually do  ceremonies under foot of Mount bromo. It’s called Yadnya Kasada or Kasada.

This ceremony aims to give gratitude to the god, for abundant their crop production such as Fruits, Beans, Vegetables,etc. They do it from the temple (pura Luhur Poten) which is their worship, then afterward go up to the crater. they throw sacrifices into the bromo crater. They start in the middle of the night till the next Morning.  The origin of ritual life is in the 15th century legend.

In addition to the ceremony of yadnya kasada,there are also other ceremonies that the ethnic tengger do, such as karo ceremony, entas-entas ceremony, unan-unan ceremony. all the ceremonies are continuing each other.  

  • Traditional Music, and traditional dance Including the Ceremony.

Tengger society is still retaining their tradition. Various ceremonies they still do not missing their traditional dance. Such as Ujug dance, Sodoran dance, Kidung Tengger Dance, Probo Mutrim dance. Every dance has meaning

Ujug dance

This dance will be done by 2 mens, They are originally Tengger people while accompanied by Traditional music gamelan karawitan. This dance describes the Familiarity of friendship. Ujug dance will be represent in karo ceremony(Marital party.

Sodoran dance

Presented about Human being and existance. It will be presented in the Yadnya Kasada ceremony. This is only danced by 3 villages of Tengger, but all the ethnic Tengger do this ceremony.

Kidung Tengger Dance

Kidung dance describes their ancestor Figures there are Joko Seger and Roro Anteng. They are praying to the god, and want to have a child. and the Hindu God( sang Hyang Widhi) blessed them. and they are have 25, they have promised to the god that the last child(Jaya Kusuma) will be Plunging into the crater. Before that Jaya Kusuma asked every 14th month of Kasada(Tengger Calendar) the ethnic Tengger will dedicate their best result of crop plantation and plunging into the Crater. and This is the origin of Yadnya Kasada beginning.

Probo Mutrim Dance

The art of this dance is assigned of god( Sang Hyang Whidi). Probo Mutrim Dance is typical of Happy dance  so the movement is so joyous. Usually this Dance will be presented every year in a sand plain (sea of sand).

  • The Famous and Skilled agriculture

On the other hand. In the agriculture sector, the local people of Tengger Their livelihood is the farmer, 95 % they work in the field. dusty are the tourism sector. Because they are living on the slopes mount Bromo, they are famous and skilled in crop production.

Commodities that plant in the slopes of bromo are cabbage, potato, spring onion, tomato, and carrot. all the commodities will be supplied outside of java. the area of mainstay agro-tourism in East Java is Sukapura. This area has fertile soil, so it can produce the best result.

Sukamade turtle beach tour is the Adventure offering Sukamade Unforgettable Experience to see the Giant Turtle. Sukamade is the sanctuary for various turtles, there are the green turtle (Chelonia Mydas), Olive ridley (Lepidochelys Olivacea), Hawksbill (Eretmochelys Imbricata) and Leatherback (Dermochelys Coriacea).

The  most common in Sukamade beach is The Green turtle (Chelonia Mydas). Because there are a lot of Green turtles landing and laying eggs on this beach. A turtle is an ancient animal,which lives more than 100 years.

Sukamade turtle beach is a part of Meru Betiri National Park, which is 6-7 hr  from the center of Banyuwangi. The national Park was protected by Dutch East Indies government rules in 1931-1938. The ministry of agriculture designated it  as a wildlife sanctuary for the Java tiger territory area of 50.000 hectares . an increase to 58.000 hectares addition from plantation land. In 1997 this area became a national park by the ministry of forestry. the national park border with different environments. in the north area border of treblasala and  perum RPH curahtakir plantation. in the eastern part border by sarongan village and sumberjambe’s plantation area. directly bordered on the south by the Indonesian ocean. and western part is bordered by various villages, Curahnongko village, Andongrejo Village, Sanenrejo Village.

Meru Betiri national park  which is renowned for abundant diversity of biodiversity, and conservation for flora and fauna. One of the magnetisms of Meru Betiri National Park is the turtle conservation. as the multiply place of the turtle, it makes the national park its known as paradise of the turtle. every year a thousand  green turtle landing in sukamade beach and lay eggs. the ranger as the conservation team, try hard to protect the turtle and the egg from predators.

In addition, Meru Betiri National park also protect the endemic flora and fauna. the fauna that possible you meet along the trip are giant palm tree, teak, benda tree,jungle jackfruit, rubber, and many more. and beside this,the endemic fauna in this area such as leopard, bull, peacock, eagle, black long tail monkey(lutung), grey monkey, jungle roster, etc.

Seeking the Turtles

Seeking the turtle is the main Thing we do in the National park. located in Sukamade beach, we do seek the sea turtle in the evening. Mama sea  turtles stay in the sea, in the afternoon. if they want to lay the eggs. Then at dusk, the mama will go to the beach and find the best place for laying the egg. find the  temperature to make their egg stabil. 85% of green  turtles coming to the beach lying the egg. There are many natural factors that make the turtle don’t come to the beach such as the predators, the brighten environment, etc. Green Turtles average more than 100 eggs in one nest. According to the National Park regulations, only one turtle every night allows for the observed attraction. Meanwhile let the other turtle process naturally.

Plant the egg in the semi-hatchery area

After processing the egg, the ranger will take out all the eggs and bring them to the semi-hatchery area and plant there. This is the place for relocating eggs from the beach, to avoid predators. The predators are jungle pig, wild bard, monkey and people. the semi-hatchery area also has the predator’s red ant. the red ant will eat the placenta of the baby.

the egg will stay in the semi-hatchery around 2 weeks- 2 months. they take 25% for the attraction for the visitor and education.and the rest will be released naturally.

Release Baby turtle in the next morning

releasing baby turtles we do it in the early morning around 6 AM. The ranger has prepared a bucket of the turtle for every group.

Bring them to the sea, release  them the sun rise is rising. that we know the turtle is truly sensitive to the sun. so it is a good choice for them release in the early morning.

realising them rather far from the sea, it is makes their memory printing on where they are coming from. if they are ready to laying the egg, they will come back again here. so how clever they are.

during we release them, some predator like sea eagle will come. so the amount that we have released, from 1000 turtles only 1 turtle can survive in the nature. many factor in the nature such us, the underwater predatorsthe temperature of water , and pollution of water.

so, what we are doing now is helping the regeneration of the turtle from ancient animal.

How about The Accommodation?

The accommodation is basic. We live in the jungle all the things are limited such as the electricity starts at 5 PM – 10 PM. No networking, phone signal and TV. It is good for you who are a peaceful seekers. So, before you start the trip, get everything done before you enter this area.

All the things are fun and adventures. You must try and gain a lot of experiences in a different way while traveling to Sukamade.

How to get in East Java..

East Java is only about 1 hour flight from Bali – landed at Surabaya Airport. Meanwhile, it will take about 5-7 hours to reach java by land transportation from Bali (depends on location in Bali). Reaching East Java by bus is possible from Bali and cross Bali strait with Ferry at Ketapang Harbor – Banyuwangi.

Other ideas if you are coming from Central Java (Yogyakarta), you can flight to Surabaya airport (1 hour). Meanwhile take by train is one of the best way to get in East Java and stop at Malang City.

Day 1
Yogyakarta to Malang by Train

Start in the morning at 07.45 have to be ready at Tugu Train station in Yogyakarta – Malioboro. This is Malioboro Express and it is definitely one of the more comfortable train ride in Asia. The Malioboro Express train takes about 8 hours direct towards Malang. Arrive in Malng around midday, take the rest of the day in Malang or just sightseeing around. There is the Jodipan Rainbow Village which is really close to Malang Kota Baru Train Station (about 200 meters).

Day 2-3
Malang City and Waterfall

Malang city is the highland on East Java. This city is completely perfect as a stopover to start journey in East Java. With the breeze of climate make comfortable to stay there for awhile. Day 3
Bromo Sunrise – Bondowoso City

Start in the midnight from Malang and have to be ready for Bromo Sunrise. The trip depart at 12.30 am. The driver and guide will pick you up at the hotel and driving direct to Cemara Lawang village at Bromo. This is the last village where all modes transportation must stop and swap into Jeep (4WD). After enjoy Bromo Sunrise then further driving to Bondowoso city about 6 hours for Ijen Hotel (Stay at hotel). Enjoy and relax at the hotel waiting to start trip to Ijen in midnight (12.00 am).

Day 4-5
Ijen Crater – Sukamade Turtle Beach

Tour depart in midnight at 12.00 am from hotel in Bondowoso. This trip is ready for “Blue Fire” tour. But if you don’t want to see blue fire, you can depart from hotel at 03.00 am- talk to the guide.

What about needs during explore East Java?

Once you arrive in East Java you have to prepare some stuff (needs) that necessary to be with you. Here are the following stuff list you may have during the tour;

  • Don’t be fooled with temperature in East Java that always 28-30 degree Celsius. When you have a tour program visit mountain, the temperature can be drop at 0-10 degree Celsius in summer. Bring some layers for your body, scarf, trousers, hiking shoes, hat (if any) are better to have them along the trip.
  • Visit Ijen crater, please prepare your own head lamp, windproof jacket. Every summer on the top of mount Ijen will be a bit windy (strong wind) and dusty.
  • Bring your own standard first aid. Commonly some travel agency have them too and it is just a basic first aid.
  • Always bring a toilet paper with you. Common Indonesian toilets aren’t has it inside.
  • Prepare a mosquito repellent is much better when you visit a tropical country.
  • Don’t forget to have an internet connection wherever you are. You can buy a Sim Card for your mobile phone. Telkomsel has a wide coverage network area and it has already support from city up to remote area. The price of Sim Card around IDR 30,000 and you got 6GB of internet access.

Best time to visit East Java

The best time to visit is from April to October. It is summer in Indonesia and temperature at Bromo and Ijen can be low at 0-10 degree.

Please keep in mind during hot season (May – September) the land will not so green as like the first month of summer. The rice field getting brown and ready for harvesting and waterfalls might be less water.

Food in East Java

Indonesia has almost the same of food taste as typical cuisine of South East Asian Country (Spicy food). Make sure you are already adapt with this taste. On the other hand, you can also find large selection of food if you are staying in a big City – there will be available western-style food.

In conclusion..

However, visit East Java is fairly easy to be accessed either from Central or East- Bali. There are so many modes of transportation you can use to go everywhere. But hiring a private car is much better then public transport to reach the tourism spot directly.

There are two ways to reach Banyuwangi city from Bali. It can be by land which then uses a Ferry to cross the Bali strait, or you can use a plane and land at Banyuwangi airport.

Most travelers use the Ferry to cross to Banyuwangi if they are in Bali. Besides being easy to access by land and sea, the ticket price is also quite cheap compared to planes.

What are the best things to do in Banyuwangi?

The first place that is the best place to visit is Ijen Crater.

Ijen Volcano is closed every first Friday of the month

Ijen will be closed every first Friday of the month. This decision had been taken by government to have a chance to maintain environment at Ijen area. There will be an activity of local people and or environment organisation to clean Ijen area from rubbish. It aims to keep this tourism area clean and comfort for all tourist during spend their holiday by visiting mount Ijen.

Here are the following dates Ijen will be closed in 2026;

January, 2nd
February, 6th
March, 6th
April, 3rd
May, 1st
June, 5th
July, 3rd
August, 7th
September, 4th
October, 2nd
November, 6th
December, 4th

Please avoid those dates if you plan to visit Ijen volcano. For more information, don’t be hesitate to contact us for any questions or need help for customizing your whole tour plan in East Java. 🙂

When does mount Ijen will reopened for visitors?

Ijen crater will reopened for visitors starting on Saturday 02.00 am. You have two choices whether you want to see the blue fire with the tour start at 12.00am or The Crater tour only with 03.00 am from your accommodation. You will go as weekend charge with an extra for your entrance ticket and the blue fire guide. Entrance ticket for foreigner on weekdays is IDR 100k and on weekend is IDR 150k. Please make sure that your plan to visit Ijen is out from that dates above, so you can keep going to witness the beauty of Ijen crater.

What should I do?

Taking wrong date tour for Ijen is annoying, but you shouldn’t. Here are the list that you can do while waiting for the Ijen reopened on the next day.

Visit Tabuhan Island
If you love beaches activity, Tabuhan Island will create your good experience. You can do snorkling or chilling out at this beach while enjoy the white sand and the best underwater view. This beach is located in the north of Ferry port. You can take by Grab Taxi from your accommodation or contact us to arrange this optional trip for you.

Visit Kaliklatak Plantation
Kaliklatak plantation is located in the north west of Banywuangi city centre. This place is home of commodity plantation such as; Coffee, rubber, cacao and any tropical plants inside which have existed hundred years ago until now and founded by the Dutch. If you love to explore plantation, this place is good as your optional tour.

Chill out and playing surf board at Red Island Beach
Red Island Beach is located  in the south of Banyuwangi city centre. It takes about 3 hours to drive to reach theis area. The best time to start is at 9 am from your accommodation in Banyuwangi and finish in the afternoon while enjoying the sunset. There is also surf camp in this beach which you can join a surf lesson and enjoy the tides with surf board after following the short course of surfing.

Ijen volcano or commonly mentioned as Ijen crater is situated on the border of Banyuwangi and Bondowoso district. You can reach Ijen by customizing your tour program like visit Mount Bromo – Ijen Crater. Check the tour itinerary by clicking the link below;

Meru Betiri at glance

The Meru Betiri National Park is located on the eastern side of Java island. According to the official’s data, Meru Betiri covered as wide as 58.000 hectares. It has numerous varieties of flora and fauna inside which shows on the land, up in the sky and along coastline.

This rich of variety of life form namely Biodiversity. It has five type of ecosystems; coastal forest, brackish forest, lowland rain forest, swamp forest, and rheofit ecosystem. All those ecosystems are home to animals and plants which have numerous species.

Endemic flora in the Meru Betiri is Padmosari Flower (Rafflesia zollingeriana). While the native wildlife resident which have been recorded by officials are Leopards, Bull, Deer, Boar, Green Peafowl, Javanese Hawk, Slow Loris, Primates . As for the types of turtles are Leatherback turtle, Olive riddle turtle, Hawksbill turtle, and Green turtle.

Some zoologist states that in Meru Betiri is one of the main site of Javanese Tiger. In fact, those beauty animal has been avowed extinct long ago. Meanwhile, in recently update data they states that they found the track of Leopard and caught them on the camera.

In addition to biological potential, Meru Betiri National Park also has a very strategic tourism potential to visit. In the district of Banyuwangi there are Sukamade Beach, Rajegwesi Beach, Green Bay, Damai Bay and Stone Shore. While Jember area there are Permisan Beach, Meru Beach, Nanggelan Beach and Bandealit Beach.

The first step of sea turtle’s baby see the world

The most popular beach in Meru Betiri National Park is Sukamade. This is the main site of four species turtles come ashore to lay their eggs every night beneath the sand. The average number of the eggs for one turtle is 90 to 130 eggs. If the ranger find more than one turtle in a night, it can be 350 eggs per night. Thus, due to the intensity of turtles producing egg highly, the national park ranger have to keep this area from poacher and wild predator in 24 hours.

Turtle hatchery

The National Park ranger take good nurturing care of the eggs. They collect it into the hatchery zone and waiting for 40 days until all of them hatching. The percentage of  hatching can reach 93% as if they can make the chamber-nest temperature as well as natural process.

Once the eggs have hatched and the turtle’s baby are born, the ranger and or caretaker feed them well with the smooth chopping fish and algae. They have to make sure that the baby physically well-nourished before they release them to the sea. Seeing the process of releasing is heartwarming when witness this tiny creatures grab by the tides and facing their future in the ocean.

Meanwhile, according to the officials ranger, the natural process of hatching can be only 75 %. It is due to many factors influence the process of hatching. Some factors which can make hatching process unsuccessful are; predators, sea tides, temperature under the sand. The natural predator for turtle’s eggs are boar, monkey, snake, monitor lizard.

How to get to Meru Betiri National Park?

Meru Betiri National Park can be accessed from two regencies. Both regencies are Jember and Banyuwangi. If you start from Jember regency, you can start the tour direct to Bande Alit beach and then continue to Sukamade.

But if you take from Banyuwangi you have a big chance to visit many stunning places. You can visit Ijen Crater and afterwards going to Sukamade. You can also take a tour to go there after taking Kalibaru Plantation tour.

However it can be easy when you take from Banyuwangi. Common tour agency customized their tour to Meru Betiri National Park after Ijen or Kalibaru Plantation tour.

Hiring private car

Hiring private car is fully recommended. It caused will make you easier to enjoy your journey to go anywhere. As we know that the distance of tourism spots in East Java are pretty far from one to another. Somehow transportation to Sukamade will change two times. First using a smooth city car and then change it into 4 WD car. But if you are already hiring 4 WD car from Banyuwangi, you don’t need to change it.

Using public transport

On the other hand, there is also another option to reach Meru Betiri National Park. That is using public transport. If you are coming from Banyuwangi, you can take a bus at Brawijawa Bus Station and stop at Jajag regency. Afterwards, you have to search a transport to drop you off at Pesanggaran Village. Once arrive in Pesanggaran, you have to look for another transportation to bring you to Sarongan village or direct to Sukamade. It needs a lot of effort and patience to search transportation service to bring you to Meru Betiri.

However, in this case hiring private car is fully recommended than using public transport. You can change the option by taking Bus and then booking the jeep with local tour agency in southern of Banyuwangi.

Things to do in Meru Betiri National Park

You will be driving from Ijen to Sukamade around 4 hours to reach Pesanggaran village. In this place you have to change your vehicle into 4 WD car. Along the way to go there you will pass through the rocky terrain and stop at the awesome places that makes the tour will be going to WOW!

  • Green Bay

Green bay is like a private beach. Hide away from people and it is located inside of Meru Betiri National Park. With white warm sand and blue-greenish water, this beach is the best place to visit during the tour after through rocky terrain. You can do swimming, taking plenty photos or just sightseeing around this beach. To reach this spot you have to get through the dirt narrow track, cross shallow river and a bit physical demanding activities.

  • Traditional Brown Sugar

Traditional Brown Sugar at Meru Betiri

It is traditional brown sugar industry which has been managed by local people in Sungai Lembu area. They take the sugar liquid from coconut bloom at the plantation. Early morning around 04.00 am they start to go to the plantation to take the sugar liquid then process this for about 4 hours before it become a brown solid sugar. It is traditionally sugar maker. Visit this place and gain the new experience on your travel in East Java.

  • Cocoa Plantation

This plantation is controlled by local as their daily job. They work for 8 hours in a day to controlled this plant. Other locals are also working in the cocoa factory in this area.

  • Turtle at Sukamade Beach

This is the icon of Meru Betiri National Park. There are four species of turtle that come ashore laying their eggs in every year. Those species are Leatherback turtle , Lekang turtle , Hawksbill turtle, and Green turtle. In Sukamade beach the most regularly come ashore is Green Turtle. One green turtle can lay their eggs average 80 – 120 eggs per night.

The activity of Meru Betiri National Park Ranger

This is not about the place for turtle, but also Sukamade is one of the main site of Turtle conservation in East Java. The National Park Ranger keep this place to help their existence still in a good record number.

Here is the National Park Ranger was collecting the turtle’s eggs and put them all beneath the sand. Afterwards waiting for 40 days as turtle babies hatching.
