If you love hiking, goes to this two active volcanoes is the best choice to experience your hobby during your trip in East Java. Bromo hiking level is easy and it can be done with smooth trekking. The distance from parking area to the summit is about 1.5km and it takes about 20 minute.
Meanwhile Ijen hiking level is intermediate. Its combined flat road, steep, and semi-flat road. The track length is about 3km up from the parking area. The duration to reach the top can be vary about 1hr – 1.5hrs.

After enjoying the sunrise and then it’s time for Bromo hiking. The hike is taking about 20 minutes to reach the Bromo summit. The trek is also easy and you will many people on the way up to the Bromo.

Ijen Crater is also as good as Bromo. The view of the lake, sunrise and the activity of sulfur miners are the things you must see when you visit Kawah Ijen.

At 12.00 am, the driver will pick you up from your accommodation in Surabaya or Malang. After that, keep driving to Probolinggo regency until you arrive at “Cemara Lawang Village,” the final village close to Bromo. When you get to the Bromo area at 2:30 am, change the car in 4WD. You will ascend to the sunrise viewing location in the jeep (altitude 2,770 asl).
The sun rises at 5.30 am, and while the tourist waits for the sun to rise, they could have time to stop at a nearby little coffee shop for a cup of coffee or tea. Driving down to the Bromo Caldera (sea of sand) at around 6:00 a.m. to take in the expansive panorama of the Bromo Caldera Landscape. The jeep is moving and stop at parking area afterwards.
While the Jeep waits, you can make your way to Mount Bromo’s summit to see the volcano’s activity. After trekking Mt. Bromo, return to the car for breakfast before departing. In general, depart Bromo at 9:00 a.m. and continue driving to Bondowoso/Banyuwangi regency. It is the closest spot to stay for the Ijen tour and free program.

Wake up at 03.00 a.m. and prepare to travel to the Ijen area; the drive will take around 1.5 hours to reach the Ijen parking lot. You may arrange any items that you will need while hiking, and if you are ready, hiking will begin.
It takes around 1-2 hours to go across a 3 km long track that are 200 meters flat, 150 meters steep, and the rest is semi-flat. When you reach the top, you must continue to follow the guide to explore the region. Not only do tourists enjoy the panoramic view of the lake and sunrise from the summit of Ijen, but sulfur miners also work there.
Then return to the parking lot for a morning coffee break at a little coffee shop in the Ijen area and a simple breakfast. After that, transfer to your next destination. Drop off points include Banyuwangi Airport and the ferry port if you wish to travel to Bali or back to Malang/Surabaya. The tour will finish about 10 a.m.

1. When is the best season to visit Mount Bromo?
The best time to visit Mount Bromo is during the dry season from April to October. Rain intensity is higher during the wet season from November to March, but the National Park is still open during this period if tourist wants to visit Bromo.
2. Where is Bromo located and how long will it take to reach Bromo area?
Mount Bromo is located in the south from the flight service – Juanda Airport Surabaya and It is driving within 3 hours to reach Tengger area. If you come from Malang, Bromo is located in the east and driving for 3.5hrs.
3. How does the landscape look like?
Mount Bromo stand within massive Caldera and Tengger tribe in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. There are 5 volcanoes within the Caldera; Mount Bromo (2.329 asl), Mount Batok (2.470 asl), Mount Widodaren (2.650 asl) Mount Wetangan (2.661 asl), Mount Kursi (2.581 asl). Those five volcanoes stands within a vast area of Caldera (sea of sand) or well known as Lautan Pasir.
Cemoro lawang is the village of Tengger people and it stand higher than Mount Bromo location. Mount Pananjakan is the view point located on the rim of Bromo Caldera. From view point you can also see the majestic eruption of Mount Semeru (3.676 asl) the highest mountain in Java located behind the Caldera or Bromo area.
4. Can I see the Milky Way at Mt. Bromo?
Sure, you can request for the optional milky way tour which begins around midnight from your hotel at Cemoro Lawang. You will lead to several view points such as Mentigen hill, Seruni point, Mount Pananjakan and Kingkong Hill. You should bring a suitable camera equipment such as tripod and lens for Milky Way photography.
To make it easier you can order camping package tour, in order you have a lot of time to see the Milky Way moment until sunrise. When the sun is shining, its time to go down to reach the base of Mount Bromo. The distance between View Point to Mount Bromo around 8 km. Tourist should better to take by Ojek (Motorcycle service) and its cost about 150k/person to reach Bromo base and drop you off to the lodge.
5. Can I hike instead of taking the jeep tour?
Yes, you can take the tour solely on foot than taking the jeep. Its program called Bromo Trekking. You start around midnight from your hotel at Cemoro Lawang. The guide will lead you hike through Seruni point and reach the Kingkong Hill. This trek takes about 2 hours climb the steep cliff of Mount Pananjakan (No require any climb special technique). I
if you prefer to see the Bromo Crater, you should rent Ojek (local motor service) or Jeep. It caused the distance between view point to Mount Bromo about 8 km.
6. How much is the entrance ticket cost in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park?
Weekdays : IDR 250.000
Weekend : IDR 350.000
7. How much is the horse ride at Mount Bromo?
It cost around 150K IDR for one way Parking lot – Bromo Upstairs base. For return trip it cost around 175K IDR. Note that the horse ride end close to the start of the stairs to climb Mount Bromo. Then you still have to climb for 250 upstairs to reach Mount Bromo rim.
You can take by walk like most visitors do (Walk 1.5 km). In term of price, do negotiate with the horseman about the price to get a best deal.
8. What is the temperature at Mount Bromo?
In the early morning the temperature can be as low as 3 – 7 Degrees Celsius. Temperature in the late noon will be around 15 – 20 Degrees Celsius. Commonly in the late afternoon to evening the temperature drop quickly when its windy or rainy.
9. What should I wear to Mount Bromo?
Wear jacket and add some layers are good for you when you visit Mount Bromo on April – October (dry season). Add some accessories like hat, shoes and gloves. If you don’t have those, you can buy it in nearest souvenir shop at Bromo, cost around 45-60K IDR.
10. Are the toilets available along the trek?
Yes, There is a basic toilet (in typical local squat – style) sometimes the toilet paper is not provided and you should bring by yourself. There are toilets at view point and the jeep parking lot. You can use toilet before start hiking Mount Bromo.
11. Can I camp at Bromo?
Sure you can do. We arrange and customize camping program. It is included dinner and breakfast along do a camping program. Once you do camping program, you can enjoy the milky way on the top of view point. You will get moment of sunset, milky way and sunrise from the campsite.
12. Can I visit Bromo during festival?
Yes, you can visit Bromo during festival. Avoid the silence day as Mount Bromo is Close. Silence day is the holy day for Tengger people which are mostly Hinduism.

Mount Ijen is located in the eastern part of Java Island which is lies on the border between Bondowoso and Banywuangi regency. If you come from Bali, it would be easy for you to reach there by taking a private or public car to reach Gilimanuk Ferry port. Then Cross to Java by Ferry and find your accommodation for staying a while before joining the trip in the night to Ijen.
Meanwhile if you come from the west part such as from Malang or Surabaya, you can take by train to stop by at Banyuwangi Kota Station. It is flexible for you whether you start the trip directly from the train station or from your accommodation – must arrive on the day before travel date.

3. How does the landscape look like?
Mount Ijen stand with a massive sulphur production on the crater base and rocky. With the trekking length about 3km up hill will give you another challenge of adventure while visiting the Volcano. Ijen is surrounded by one of the active volcano named Mt. Raung and Meranti Mountain. It is stand on the southwest (Mt. Raung) and on the southeast (Mt. Meranti), meanwhile on the northeast (Mt. Baluran). On the foot of the volcanoe there are villages which is spreading on Bondowoso regency and Banyuwangi regency. The locals working on the coffee plantations and as a sulphur miners at Ijen Volcano.
4. When does Mount Ijen Closed for visitors?
Mount Ijen is closed for visitors every first Friday of the month. This program has been legalized by local environment activist for cleaning program once in a month. Thus, the Ijen Volcano will be reopen on Saturday morning at 2 am. Check the update here

Ijen Trek length is about 3km starting from the entrance gate or trekking point. The Ijen trek could be divided into several parts like; 150 meter flat, 200 meters semi flat, 150 meters bending and steep, 20 meters steep and the rest is flat road until reaching the top.
