Mount bromo is a part of mount tengger. At 2,329 m (7,641 tf) above sea level. Mount  bromo is an active somma volcano, famous for its incredible nature and unique natural phenomena. The mountain that included Tengger and the position are in the complex with several mountains. not only the natural  beauty of the landscape but also their local life, that make the tourist interested in  mount bromo.

The Mountain is located in East Java offering the natural beauty of their landscape. Mount Bromo is located in a sand plain or sea of sand around 10 km, and is surrounded by several other volcanoes. Mount bromo Comes from Mount tengger, which is the largest and the highest mountain in east java. Then Mount tengger erupted and create 4 new mountains, there are mount watangan, Mount  kursi, Mount batok and Mount Bromo. From several mountains, only Mount bromo is an active volcano, and the famous one The name of mount Bromo comes from javanese language “Brahma” or the creation of hinduism.

Administratively bromo located in 4 areas, there probolinggo regency, malang regency, lumajang regency, and pasuruan regency. The Main Thing You should Do In Bromo

Enjoy sunrise from view point

Sunrise Point only takes about  30 minutes From The parking jeep. Before the sun rises, you must have a coffee break, no need to worry. Sunrise view points have several parts, like penanjakan(The highest view point, 2.770 m), kingkong hill, and sunrise Love hill. all of the spots have a good view. You also can see the highest Mountain in east Java called Mount Semeru  from all the spots.

The sun is rising at 05.30 am and if you arrive earlier, no worry you still have a coffee/tea time before reaching the view points and enjoy the sunrise. The best month for Bromo sunrise is starting from July to August as it is summer in Indonesia.

Enjoy riding with the Jeep Bromo

If you are visiting in the high season you have to wake up early, because a lot of jeeps go up in a single road to the view point and sometimes it makes a traffic jam in the mountain. As a fact, Bromo area has been covered by 4 regencies such as Malang, Pasuruan, Probolinggo and Lumajang. All those areas where all those jeeps coming from (about 1,200 units of Jeeps in total go to the view point).

There are 4 view points such as; Love Hill, Kingkong Hill, Mt. Prau and Pananjakan Mountain. All those jeeps will park nearby of each view point as requested where you wish. But sometimes the jeep is taking a little bit far away from the spot if they are coming late and they don’t have any parking space near the view point. Consequently, you have to take a walk and it can be 100 meters or more. 

After enjoying the sunrise, head back to the jeep, time for hiking to the Bromo Crater. Bromo hiking is not too hard, you can be done around 20 minutes from the parking area. The distance is about 1.5 km, with smooth Trekking. You can ride horses or walk. you will pass through the sand plain, and also there is a temple called pura luhur poten. This is a place for hindu worship. continue hiking until you find around 250 stairs, and you are on the top of the bromo crater. The bromo crater has a unique characteristic, smoky, and  is typically smelly of sulphur. 

Camping at Bromo

You also can camp at mount bromo. Mount bromo is not identically with the sunrise but also offering sunset panoramic view. Waiting for the sunset and having a cup of coffee with the incredible landscape of Mount Bromo, Mount Batok and mount Semeru as the background of the Bromo mountain range from Prau hill will give you another experience. What are the Interesting things Beside Nature?

  • Ceremony to the God, under foot of Mount Bromo

Meanwhile, the mountain and natural beauty are also offering unique attractive of cultural diversity. Tengger ethnic, the original ethnic that live around the tengger area. They are rich in culture and tradition. They annually do  ceremonies under foot of Mount bromo. It’s called Yadnya Kasada or Kasada.

This ceremony aims to give gratitude to the god, for abundant their crop production such as Fruits, Beans, Vegetables,etc. They do it from the temple (pura Luhur Poten) which is their worship, then afterward go up to the crater. they throw sacrifices into the bromo crater. They start in the middle of the night till the next Morning.  The origin of ritual life is in the 15th century legend.

In addition to the ceremony of yadnya kasada,there are also other ceremonies that the ethnic tengger do, such as karo ceremony, entas-entas ceremony, unan-unan ceremony. all the ceremonies are continuing each other.  

  • Traditional Music, and traditional dance Including the Ceremony.

Tengger society is still retaining their tradition. Various ceremonies they still do not missing their traditional dance. Such as Ujug dance, Sodoran dance, Kidung Tengger Dance, Probo Mutrim dance. Every dance has meaning

Ujug dance

This dance will be done by 2 mens, They are originally Tengger people while accompanied by Traditional music gamelan karawitan. This dance describes the Familiarity of friendship. Ujug dance will be represent in karo ceremony(Marital party.

Sodoran dance

Presented about Human being and existance. It will be presented in the Yadnya Kasada ceremony. This is only danced by 3 villages of Tengger, but all the ethnic Tengger do this ceremony.

Kidung Tengger Dance

Kidung dance describes their ancestor Figures there are Joko Seger and Roro Anteng. They are praying to the god, and want to have a child. and the Hindu God( sang Hyang Widhi) blessed them. and they are have 25, they have promised to the god that the last child(Jaya Kusuma) will be Plunging into the crater. Before that Jaya Kusuma asked every 14th month of Kasada(Tengger Calendar) the ethnic Tengger will dedicate their best result of crop plantation and plunging into the Crater. and This is the origin of Yadnya Kasada beginning.

Probo Mutrim Dance

The art of this dance is assigned of god( Sang Hyang Whidi). Probo Mutrim Dance is typical of Happy dance  so the movement is so joyous. Usually this Dance will be presented every year in a sand plain (sea of sand).

  • The Famous and Skilled agriculture

On the other hand. In the agriculture sector, the local people of Tengger Their livelihood is the farmer, 95 % they work in the field. dusty are the tourism sector. Because they are living on the slopes mount Bromo, they are famous and skilled in crop production.

Commodities that plant in the slopes of bromo are cabbage, potato, spring onion, tomato, and carrot. all the commodities will be supplied outside of java. the area of mainstay agro-tourism in East Java is Sukapura. This area has fertile soil, so it can produce the best result.

Ijen Volcano is closed every first Friday of the month

Ijen will be closed every first Friday of the month. This decision had been taken by government to have a chance to maintain environment at Ijen area. There will be an activity of local people and or environment organisation to clean Ijen area from rubbish. It aims to keep this tourism area clean and comfort for all tourist during spend their holiday by visiting mount Ijen.

Here are the following dates Ijen will be closed in 2025;

January, 3rd
February, 7th
March, 7th
April, 4th
May, 2nd
June, 6th
July, 4th
August, 1st
September, 5th
October, 3rd
November, 7th
December, 5th

When does mount Ijen will reopened for visitors?

Ijen crater will reopened for visitors starting on Saturday 02.00 am. You have two choices whether you want to see the blue fire with the tour start at 12.00am or The Crater tour only with 03.00 am from your accommodation. You will go as weekend charge with an extra for your entrance ticket and the blue fire guide. Entrance ticket for foreigner on weekdays is IDR 100k and on weekend is IDR 150k. Please make sure that your plan to visit Ijen is out from that dates above, so you can keep going to witness the beauty of Ijen crater.

What should I do?

Taking wrong date tour for Ijen is annoying, but you shouldn’t. Here are the list that you can do while waiting for the Ijen reopened on the next day.

Visit Tabuhan Island
If you love beaches activity, Tabuhan Island will create your good experience. You can do snorkling or chilling out at this beach while enjoy the white sand and the best underwater view. This beach is located in the north of Ferry port. You can take by Grab Taxi from your accommodation or contact us to arrange this optional trip for you.

Visit Kaliklatak Plantation
Kaliklatak plantation is located in the north west of Banywuangi city centre. This place is home of commodity plantation such as; Coffee, rubber, cacao and any tropical plants inside which have existed hundred years ago until now and founded by the Dutch. If you love to explore plantation, this place is good as your optional tour.

Chill out and playing surf board at Red Island Beach
Red Island Beach is located  in the south of Banyuwangi city centre. It takes about 3 hours to drive to reach theis area. The best time to start is at 9 am from your accommodation in Banyuwangi and finish in the afternoon while enjoying the sunset. There is also surf camp in this beach which you can join a surf lesson and enjoy the tides with surf board after following the short course of surfing.
