6 Days Explore East Java to Awesome Spots

East java is located on the eastern side of Java island. This place has so many awesome places to visit like Volcanoes, National Park and so many waterfalls. Those places attract a lot of tourist every year. The most frequently visited spot in East Java are Mt. Bromo and Ijen Crater. Those place have their own strong attraction to witness.

Bromo, is one of Indonesia’s famous volcano for ages. It lies on the highland of Tengger area which has altitude 2.329 above sea level. It sits on the vast of caldera and perform a peaceful form among the mist. After the sunlight breaks the sky, it shows the magnificent view and beauty silhouette with faint sun.

Meanwhile Bromo perform the magnificent view, Ijen crater shows the strong typical of volcano. With the beauty of turquoise color of acidic lake, Ijen hypnotize visitor’s eyes to see it closer. Blue fire phenomenon down at the crater floor become the most favorite attraction in the dark before sunrise.

How to traveling around East Java?

One of the good spot to start your travel on Java is from Bali. Why it should be from Bali? Bali island is the most closest island to Java by using ferry and its popular option for tourist to take it. As a result, there are so many tourist come from Bali to get to Java. To explore East Java you can take by Bus or Train and the way to reach one to another place it will be about 5-7 hrs.

MOTORBIKE, CAR or TRAIN?
There are so many options you can take to explore east java. First, motorbike is the cheaper modes transportation than car, if you can find out motorbike rental you can hiring and make a good deal to get a good price.

In contrast, we recommend using car. According to that case, it is good choice when using car you will get so many benefits. One of the benefit is the temperature in East  Java is pretty hot during July to September, it can be 30-32 Celsius degree. By using the car will save you from that temperature. Furthermore, you will have a private goods storage for all your luggage during the tour.

Another option is using train. Yess.. Train is one of the good transportation on Java to go somewhere and of course it is cheaper than hiring a private car. In spite of it is cheaper than private car, train will not support if you want to travelg around East Java deeply. It is due to the train station in East java are only in Banyuwangi, Probolinggo, Malang and Surabaya. Meanwhile some spots are quite far from those train station. But you can take by train if you just want to visit several places which is located nearby train station.

TRAVEL START FROM BANYUWANGI (Take by Ferry at Ketapang Harbor)

Visit Ijen Crater – Banyuwangi
It is one of the greatest acidic lake on earth that produce massive of sulfur on the crater floor. There are a lot of tourist coming from overseas are just to witness the beauty of Ijen lake. The most popular attraction in this area is a phenomenon of blue fire down at the crater floor. Meanwhile for those who wants to see blue fire have to start their tour in midnight from Banyuwangi city center. Then driving for about 1,5 hrs to reach ijen parking lot (Paltuding). Paltuding is not only as a parking area but also it is the main spot of Ijen’s Ranger, here the adventure begins!

Visit Madakaripura Waterfall and Bromo – Probolinggo
After visit Ijen, then continue to reach Probolinggo area. This tour will take about 5 hrs driving to be there. Arrive at Probolinggo then you can reach Madakaripura waterfall directly. Madakaripura waterfall is located in Lumbang Village. It is one of stunning waterfall in East Java.

The next trip is going to Bromo area. You have to reach the area which is called Cemara Lawang. This is the last village in Bromo – Tengger area and also as the place where you can change your vehicle into the jeep or 4WD car. There are so many hostels or homestay where all traveler can keep their luggage or take a rest after long driving from Ijen.

Visit Tumpak Sewu Waterfall – Lumajang
Tumpak sewu waterfall is one of Indonesia’s best waterfall. It isn’t the largest, even in East Java, but it is definitely the most impressive. The view from above is looks like the tree of life and from below it definitely wonderful. It is simply mind-blowing when you see this in real.

You have to wake up early to catch its moment. Even if sunrise won’t be on the waterfall, the view will be wonderful with the fog and its create mystical atmosphere and it is actually the view what you want. Get down to Tumpak Sewu will boast your Adrenalin. The track to reach the spot of waterfall is extreme track and totally physical demanding. Once you made it all your effort will be paid by the view and the scenery of the waterfall from the bottom.

Visit Goa Tetes (Tetes Cave) – Lumajang
Goa Tetes or tetes cave is located nearby Tumpak Sewu waterfall. It can be reached after visit Tumpak Sewu direct going through the narrow path. Goa Tetes is essentially collection of caves and waterfall that hanging on the cliff. The track is still extreme but the view is so awesome.

Visit Kalibaru Plantation – Kalibaru, Banyuwangi
Kalibaru Plantation is located in the southern area of Banyuwangi regency. This plantation lies between Gumitir mountain and Glenmore. This area is being managed by government and it has various plantation like coffee, cocoa, rubber, sugar cane and many more. This plantation is also producing a good brand of coffee like Kopi lanang and Kopi Luwak. If you are a coffee lover, just come here and try Kopi Luwak. It is being argued as the best coffee in the world.

Visit Meru Betiri National Park (Sukamade) – Sarongan, Banyuwangi
Meru Betiri National Park is a good place for who seek a peaceful place. Hide away from the crowd and its located in the south of Banyuwangi area, it becomes a good place for those who love to do adventure and seeking a peaceful-silent place. In this area there is no phone signal, no internet access, no tv and electricity in only on from 6 pm to 10 pm. Meru Betiri is well known as the main site of the sea turtle. Starting from February to October is the high season for the turtle come ashore laying their eggs.

Visit Pulau Merah (Red Island Beach) – Pesanggaran, Banyuwangi
Pulau merah or well known as Red Island beach is a good place to enjoy the sunset. This beach has a good wave to do surfing either for beginner level and or pro-surfer. Stating from July to August the wave is pretty high and its possible reach up to 2.5 meters high.

Visit Alas Purwo National Park – Tegaldlimo, Banyuwangi
Alas Purwo National Park is located in the southeast of Banyuwangi regency. This national park has a specific icon of animal Javanese bull (Bull Javanicus). Other animal that live inside of this national park are peacock, wild lizard, wild hog, black and grey monkey and many more. Moreover, inside of the national park is also there is an old temple. This temple is using by Hinduism to worship the God and several ceremonies. For local people commonly Javanese believes that Alas Purwo is a mystical forest in East Java.

Here is the route map of your tour from starting point to the end point. This staring point is going from the north. If you are coming from Bali, then you have to take a Ferry across to Ketapang harbor – Banyuwangi. Afterwards you have to go to Paltuding (Ijen Parking area) and keep following the map route.

Itinerary of the awesome 6 days explore East Java.

Day 1

  • Start from Ketapang Port/Banyuwangi City center in Midnight direct to Paltuding/Ijen Crater.
  • After Ijen Crater, then continue to Madakaripura Waterfal and direct to Cemara Lawang Village (Overnight at the hostel at Bromo area).

Day 2

  • Wake up at 03.00 am changing the car into 4WD for Bromo sunrise.
  • Explore Caldera and Bromo crater.
  • Leaving Bromo area at 09.30 am
  • Continue driving to Tumpak sewu (Overnight at the homestay)

Day 3

  • See the majestic of Tumpak Sewu waterfall and sunrise.
  • Down to the cauldron of Tumpak Sewu and continue to Gua Tetes.
  • Around 14.00 pm check out from Tumpak Sewu and continue to Kalibaru. Overnight at Kalibaru Cottage.

Day 4

  • Tour begins at 09.00 am and start to explore Kalibaru Plantation.
  • Start to go to Meru Betiri National Park.
  • Check in at Sukamade Guest house around 18.00 pm

Day 5

  • Visit Green Bay and seeing the process of making traditional Brown Sugar.
  • Visit Red Island Beach (Overnight)

Day 6

  • Visit Alas Purwo National Park.
  • Observe flora and fauna.
  • Visiting old temple Giri Salaka.
  • Direct driving to Ketapang harbor.
