Where to stay?
Accommodations for this excursion will be at Sukamade homestay first, followed by Bromo – Inside The Bromo Tengger National Park.
Sukamade is located inside Meru Betiri National Park and offers basic lodging. The finest place to escape both the crowd and serenity is there. Sukamade, which is situated in a rural area with no phone service and only wifi access, becomes a unique tour experience.
Additionally, Bromo’s accommodations are simply stylish and comfortable. The hotel appears to be close to the Bromo mountain and Sunrise view point because it is situated in the last settlement at Bromo.
Tour Itinerary
- Day 1
- Departure time : 03.00 am
- Pick up from hotel / meeting point using minibus
- Explore Ijen Crater
- Temperature : Dry season will be at 4 degrees Celcius (July - August)
At midnight, the tour leaves Banyuwangi. At 3:00 am, the vehicle and your guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you, in about 1.5 hours driving, right to Ijen’s basement. If you travel from Bali and pick up at the Ketapang Ferry port, it is also doable.
Arrive at the Ijen basement at 2:30 am in the morning and get ready before going on an Ijen hike. Complete the path and arrive at Ijen Summit in 1–2 hours. Enjoy the view of Ijen from the summit. Blue flames may also be visible if you so desire. To get a better glimpse at the blue flames, your guide will take you all the way to the bottom of the Ijen crater (Optional)
Around 4.30 am, start trekking back up to the summit and consider seeing out the Ijen Sunrise from the top of Ijen. From here, you can see Ijen Crater Lake’s stunning beauty as well as the activity of sulfur miners on the crater floor.
In addition, return to the automobile for a quick breakfast and a direct ride to Sukamade. Driving to Sarongan village in the southernmost region of Banyuwangi regency takes about 4-5 hours. Visitors eat lunch in this village because it is the last rest break before Sukamade.
Around 4:00 pm, arrive at Sukamade Homestay. The traveler is free to wander the village as they choose during the leisurely and unscripted program. Around 6 pm, dinner is served, and preparations are ongoing for a trip to Sukamade Beach to watch turtles deposit their eggs in the sand.
Note: Please take in account, National Park announce that travellers are not allowed to go down to the crater, but if you want to go, that will be your own risk. We recommend to follow your guide instruction if you want to do that. (Blue fire tour required a good weather)
Time Table
- 03.00 am : Depart from Banyuwangi to Ijen crater basement
- 04.30 : Arrive at Ijen crater basement and start hiking
- 06.00 : Reach the summit of Mt.Ijen
- 07.00 am :Heading back to the car and continued to Sukamade
- 12.00 pm : Reach Sarongan village for lunch
- 04.00 pm : Arrive at Sukamade homestay
- 18.00 pm : Dinner is served and continued joining program searching turtles on the beach and see them in processing laying eggs in the sand.
- 23.00 pm : Program ended. It is the maximum time to search the turtle, if you are lucky to find them earlier, this will be end up earlier too.
- Day 2
All visitors should adhere to the plan early in the morning to deport the young turtle back to the sea. It is a lovely sight to observe the little creature struggling to get by at home.
All visitors returned to the guesthouse for a quick breakfast after releasing the baby turtles. Heading to Bromo from the Sukamade region at around 8:00 a.m. The final settlement at Bromo will be Cemara Lawang where the hotel is located.

Prepare for the Bromo Sunrise trip by getting up early, at 03:00 in the morning. You will be picked up by the jeep from your hotel, and it will take around 45 minutes to go to the dawn viewing site.
Arrive to the sunrise viewing area at 4:00 am, but the sunrise is not quite ready. So you still have time to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea as you wait for the sun to rise.
It’s time to get to the dawn viewing location and take in the splendor of Mount Bromo and Semeru as a backdrop as the sun begins to rise at 05:30 in the morning.
Returning to the jeep for the subsequent trip after leaving the dawn viewing area about 6:00 am. Getting ready to hike the Bromo mountain and making a smooth ascent to the Bromo Caldera.
The summit may be reached in about 30 minutes. Enjoy the view of Mount Bromo from the rim while listening to the sound of rumbling magma.
Around 7:00 a.m., leave the Bromo rim, get back in the jeep, and return to the hotel for breakfast before leaving the Bromo region. Leaving the village of Bromo around 9:00 am, moving straight to the final drop-off location in Malang or Surabaya. Tour officially ended and thank you.

1.What is the best season to visit Ijen Crater?
The best season to visit Ijen during dry season (April – October). During the wet season the intensity of rain will be higher until the end of March.
2. Where is Ijen located and how long will it take to reach?
Ijen Crater or as well known as Kawah Ijen located in the eastern part of Java island. It covered by 3 regencies (Bondowoso, Situbondo and Banyuwangi). Banyuwangi is the gate to enter Ijen Crater and it is accessible city. From Surabaya to Banyuwangi driving around 8 hrs. If you come from Bali it is possible to pick you up at Ketapang Harbor or your hotel in Bali (Extra charge involved).
3. What is the landscape look like?
Ijen Crater is formed by volcano complex (group of volcano) in East Java. On the top of Mount Ijen there is a huge acidic crater lake with turquoise color. It becomes one of the biggest acidic lake on earth. One of the highlight of Ijen is its blue flames that can only be seen at night/dark. The blue flames is actually ignited sulphuric gas, which emerges from the cracks at high pressure and temperature above 600 Degrees Celsius. You will also have the opportunity to see how the miner brave to breaks the sulphur rocks from the crater (source: https://www.nationalgeographic.com)
4. How difficult is it the hike to the crater rim?
It is about 3.2 km hike (1.5 hrs) from the trail-head at Paltuding to the crater rim. The track is divided into 4 parts. 800 meter medium steep, 750 meter hard steep, 650 meter medium steep, 800 meter flat.
5. Can I go down to the crater to see blue flames closer ?
Our guide will only be able to lead you up to the crater rim. To go down to the crater floor you will be leaded by local guide (ex-miner). This hike approximately about 45 mins through the steep rim and a small rock path. You should be aware with your step, just step on proper stone to prevent the stone fall-down. In early morning generally the stone is slippery.
6. What types of footwear are recommended for the hike?
We recommend wear any kind of footwear mountain gear. The shoes with a good grip is better than flat shoes. We are not recommend wear sandals.
7. Do I need a trekking stick for the hike?
As long as you body fit and you used to do exercise, hiking without stick is no problem. Use stick is good to keep your stability, and reducing strain on joints when going down hill.
8. Are there any toilets available along the hike?
There is no toilet along the way except at the National Park Office.
9. Do I need bring water?
Surely yes, doing trek for 3 km and through steep route you will be sweating and thirsty. Bring one or two bottles of mineral water for each is enough.
10. Can I camp at Ijen?
Yes, you can Camping at Ijen and we organize it.
11. Can I take a domestic flight from Surabaya to Ijen?
There are a few daily flight from Surabaya to Banyuwangi. They are (1) Garuda Indonesia 7302 (06.05 a.m – 07.00 a.m), (2) Garuda Indonesia 7304 (11.45 a.m – 12.45 a.m), Wings Abadi 1880 (12.00 a.m – 12.50 p.m). It is easier if you take flight from Surabaya to Banyuwangi just take about 1.5hrs flight than 8hrs driving. Along you take by airplane and get earlier arrive in Banyuwangi, you still have time to enjoy the city tour of Banyuwangi.
