How to get in East Java..

East Java is only about 1 hour flight from Bali – landed at Surabaya Airport. Meanwhile, it will take about 5-7 hours to reach java by land transportation from Bali (depends on location in Bali). Reaching East Java by bus is possible from Bali and cross Bali strait with Ferry at Ketapang Harbor – Banyuwangi.

Other ideas if you are coming from Central Java (Yogyakarta), you can flight to Surabaya airport (1 hour). Meanwhile take by train is one of the best way to get in East Java and stop at Malang City.

Day 1
Yogyakarta to Malang by Train

Start in the morning at 07.45 have to be ready at Tugu Train station in Yogyakarta – Malioboro. This is Malioboro Express and it is definitely one of the more comfortable train ride in Asia. The Malioboro Express train takes about 8 hours direct towards Malang. Arrive in Malng around midday, take the rest of the day in Malang or just sightseeing around. There is the Jodipan Rainbow Village which is really close to Malang Kota Baru Train Station (about 200 meters).

Yogyakarta to Malang by train

Day 2-3
Malang City and Waterfall

Malang city is the highland on East Java. This city is completely perfect as a stopover to start journey in East Java. With the breeze of climate make comfortable to stay there for awhile. Near by train station there is a colorful village named Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan. You can see it closer this unique area with the row of houses in colorful. Furthermore, Staying in Malang for couple days make you have a chance to visit the most exotic waterfall in East Java- even Indonesia.

Day 3
Bromo Sunrise – Bondowoso City

Start in the midnight from Malang and have to be ready for Bromo Sunrise. The trip depart at 12.30 am. The driver and guide will pick you up at the hotel and driving direct to Cemara Lawang village at Bromo. This is the last village where all modes transportation must stop and swap into Jeep (4WD). After enjoy Bromo Sunrise then further driving to Bondowoso city about 6 hours for Ijen Hotel (Stay at hotel). Enjoy and relax at the hotel waiting to start trip to Ijen in midnight (12.00 am).

Day 4-5
Ijen Crater – Sukamade Turtle Beach

Tour depart in midnight at 12.00 am from hotel in Bondowoso. This trip is ready for “Blue Fire” tour. But if you don’t want to see blue fire, you can depart from hotel at 03.00 am- talk to the guide.

What about needs during explore East Java?

Once you arrive in East Java you have to prepare some stuff (needs) that necessary to be with you. Here are the following stuff list you may have during the tour;

  • Don’t be fooled with temperature in East Java that always 28-30 degree Celsius. When you have a tour program visit mountain, the temperature can be drop at 0-10 degree Celsius in summer. Bring some layers for your body, scarf, trousers, hiking shoes, hat (if any) are better to have them along the trip.
  • Visit Ijen crater, please prepare your own head lamp, windproof jacket. Every summer on the top of mount Ijen will be a bit windy (strong wind) and dusty.
  • Bring your own standard first aid. Commonly some travel agency have them too and it is just a basic first aid.
  • Always bring a toilet paper with you. Common Indonesian toilets aren’t has it inside.
  • Prepare a mosquito repellent is much better when you visit a tropical country.
  • Don’t forget to have an internet connection wherever you are. You can buy a Sim Card for your mobile phone. Telkomsel has a wide coverage network area and it has already support from city up to remote area. The price of Sim Card around IDR 30,000 and you got 6GB of internet access.

Best time to visit East Java

The best time to visit is from April to October. It is summer in Indonesia and temperature at Bromo and Ijen can be low at 0-10 degree.

Please keep in mind during hot season (May – September) the land will not so green as like the first month of summer. The rice field getting brown and ready for harvesting and waterfalls might be less water.

Food in East Java

Indonesia has almost the same of food taste as typical cuisine of South East Asian Country (Spicy food). Make sure you are already adapt with this taste. On the other hand, you can also find large selection of food if you are staying in a big City – there will be available western-style food.

However, visit East Java is fairly easy to be accessed either from Central or East- Bali. There are so many modes of transportation you can use to go everywhere. But hiring a private car is much better then public transport to reach the tourism spot directly.
