The Highest Mountain In Java
Mount Semeru or better known as Mount Mahameru (the greatest) is a volcano that has a cone at its peak. Mount Semeru is located in the province of East Java and is the highest mountain in Java. Altitude of Mount Semeru is 3,676 asl. Mount Semeru is also the third highest volcano after Mount Kerinci in Sumatra and Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara. The name of the Semeru crater is better known as Jonggring Saloko. Administratively, Mount Semeru is surrounded by two districts, namely Malang Regency and Lumajang Regency. Mount Semeru is included in the area of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

In 1913 and 1946, Jonggring Saloko crater had a dome with a diameter of 3,744.8 meters until the end of November 1973. The dome widened due to eruptions until the lava flow flowed to the south side towards the Pronojiwo and Candipuro areas in Lumajang.

Generally it takes about four days and three nights to climb the summit of Mount Semeru. Climbing routes can be reached from Malang – Tumpang – Ranu pani. If you are from Surabaya you can go to Malang city to Tumpang as its routes to climb Mount Semeru.

Furthermore, the trip from Tumpang will stop in the Gubugklakah region to obtain permission to enter the national park. After all permits are complete then head to the Ranu Pane area. Ranu Pane is the last village at the foot of Mount Semeru.

In the Ranu Pane there is a checkpoint that will check the climbers’ luggage as well as some instructions from the National Park Ranger. In Ranu Pane you can also hire a Porter Service. After all the inspection process is complete then the next step is to start the climb. Make sure all your physical conditions are fit.

The climb begins by walking about 5 km down the edelweiss hillside until it reaches the spot of Watu Rejeng. Watu rejeng is a very beautiful steep rock. Then walk about 4km to reach Ranu Kumbolo.

Ranu Kumbolo
Ranu Kombolo is a large lake in the middle of the forest with very beautiful scenery. Generally, climbers do camping and stay here in advance as a stop for the first post. In Ranu Kumbolo you can also see the beauty of the sunrise on the sidelines of the hill.

Then the journey starts in the morning towards Kalimati. Along the way to Kalimati you will be taxed by the view of the vast savanna as well as the mountain lavender park. After reaching the Kalimati Post then do the second camping. Kalimati post is at an altitude of 2,700 above sea level.

Mount Semeru Climbing is done at 01.00 a.m. Starting from Kalimati Post towards Arcopodo. Then enter the first gate towards the peak of Maha

Semeru as the Holy Mountain
Javanese society – Hindus consider that Mount Semeru is a sacred mountain. With its high physical form, the Javanese – Hindu community believed that this was where the gods resided. Mountain is believed to be a source of prosperity for life. Aside from being an abundant source of water, the eruption is also believed to be the bearer of grace for soil fertility after the eruption.

Therefore the people who live in the area of Mount Semeru greatly glorify the Mountain as a place to inhabit the gifted gods. The Hindus designed the temple buildings inspired by the shape of the Mountain as a belief that Gods reside in the mountains to give their grace in the form of living water.

Tour Itineraries
Day 1 (Surabaya – Ranu Pane)
Your driver will pick you up from Surabaya. Then go to the Gubugklakah area to arrange entry permits and fill out the registration form for climbers. The journey continues towards Ranu Pane and preparations for staying in the village which is at the foot of Mount Semeru. In Ranu Pane you will meet a local guide who will guide you climb Mount Semeru. There are also available porters who will help carry camping supplies in Semeru. Stay and overnight at Ranu Pane.

Day 2 (Ranu Pane – Ranu Kumbolo)
Trekking starts at 08.00 a.m. then proceed to the checkpoint at the first post. Trekking starts with a fairly flat route and about 5 km to get to Watu Rejeng. Then the journey continues with a smooth trekking of about 4 km to arrive at Ranu Kumbolo. After arriving at Ranu Kumbolo, the climbers camping and overnight while enjoying the beauty of the panoramic view of Ranu Kumbolo lake.

Day 3 (Ranu Kumbolo – Kalimati)
Climbing is continued in the morning after breakfast and enjoying the beauty of the sunrise from between the hills on Ranu Kumbolo lake. Next trekking continues to the Kalimati Post. Kalimati is a post where the climbers will build their tent before starting the climb.

Day 4 (Kalimati – Semeru – Return Surabaya)
Climbing starts at 01.00 a.m. Prepare all climbing gear such as a climb stick or the right equipment for climbing. The climb will arrive at the last post (Arcopodo). Then the climb continued towards the main gate and continued to climb to the top. After reaching the top, climbers can enjoy the scenery around Mount Semeru and witness the eruption and roar of Mount Semeru every 10 minutes. Next down from Mount Semeru and return to a long treking to the first checkpoint (Ranu Pane) and transfer to Surabaya.

Note:
The trip down from Semeru to Ranu Pane takes approximately 8 hours. If you want to transfer to Surabaya then, arrive in Surabaya in the afternoon, make sure your flight schedule is on time or overnight at the airport hotel to take the flight schedule tomorrow is better choice.

Overnight 
Ijen : Hotel Bondowoso / Banyuwangi Area.
Bromo : Hotel at Cemara Lawang Village.
Semeru : Ranu Pane Village, Ranu Kumbolo, Kalimati.

Tour Itinerary
Day 1 (Surabaya – Madakaripura – Cemara Lawang/Bromo)
Your driver will pick you up from Surabaya. Then go to Cemara Lawang Village. Before reach Cemara Lawang Village you can stop by at Madakaripura Waterfall. Enjoy the beauty and one of the highest waterfall in East Java. Afterwards the trip continued to Cemara Lawang Village. This is the last village nearby Bromo area. Arrive in Cemara Lawang around 04.00 p.m Enjoy the sunset and overnight at the hotel. 

Day 2 (Bromo – Ranu Pane)
Morning call begins at 02.30 a.m and you still have time to prepare your stuff to get with you along explore Bromo. At 03.00 a.m Leaving the hotel and change the vehicle into the 4×4 WD or jeep. The jeep driver will bring you down through the caldera (sea of sand) and then bring you up the hill to reach the sunrise view point. Arrive at the view point around 04.00 a.m you are able to have morning coffee/tea. The sun rises around 05.15 a.m. At 06.30 a.m back to the jeep for heading back to the Bromo caldera. Stop by in the parking lot you can take by on foot or using horse service. At 08.00 a.m heading back to the jeep driving back to the hotel for having breakfast. Around 09.00 a.m driving to Ranu Pane and overnight in the last Village at the foot of Mount Semeru.

Day 3 (Ranu Pane – Ranu Kumbolo)
Trekking starts at 08.00 a.m. then proceed to the checkpoint at the first post. Trekking starts with a fairly flat route and about 5 km to get to Watu Rejeng. Then the journey continues with a smooth trekking of about 4 km to arrive at Ranu Kumbolo. After arriving at Ranu Kumbolo, the climbers camping and overnight while enjoying the beauty of the panoramic view of Ranu Kumbolo lake.

Day 4 (Ranu Kumbolo – Kalimati)
Climbing is continued in the morning after breakfast and enjoying the beauty of the sunrise from between the hills on Ranu Kumbolo lake. Next trekking continues to the Kalimati Post. Kalimati is a post where the climbers will build their tent before starting the climb.

Day 5 (Kalimati – Semeru – Malang)
Climbing starts at 01.00 a.m. Prepare all climbing gear such as a climb stick or the right equipment for climbing. The climb will arrive at the last post (Arcopodo). Then the climb continued towards the main gate and continued to climb to the top. After reaching the top, climbers can enjoy the scenery around Mount Semeru and witness the eruption and roar of Mount Semeru every 10 minutes. Next down from Mount Semeru and return to a long treking to the first checkpoint (Ranu Pane) and transfer to Malang.

Tour Itinerary
Day 1 (Surabaya – Bondowoso)
Your driver and guide will pick you up at hotel in surabaya or Juanda Airport. Upon arrival you will be greeted by our driver and guide who will send you to Bondowoso / Banyuwangi (Ijen’s hotel). It takes approximately 8 hours driving. Arrive at the hotel please talk to your guide about your program at night such as what time do you leave the hotel for ijen tour and see blue flames. After everything deal already, then enjoy your night and have a good night!

*Note: Visitors who wants to see blue flames, leave hotel at 12.00 a.m. Who doesn’t want, leave hotel at 03.00 a.m

Day 2 (Bondowoso – Ijen Crater – Bromo)
Wake up call begins at 11.45 p.m. you have time to prepare all your belongings before check out. Driving from hotel to Paltuding (ijen’s parking lot) driving about 2 hours. Arrive at parking area then prepare your stuff which are necessary to bring. Along the way up to ijen’s summit, you will find many local people who work as a sulfur miner. They start working early morning 03.00 a.m until 09.00 a.m. They known as well as strong man by tourist who meet them. It caused the sulfur miner on their one load of sulfur in their bamboo baskets are able to carry sulfur up to 80-100 kg. After reach the summit, your guide will lead you down the slope of Ijen to reach the bottom to see blue flames. Around 05.00 a.m heading back to the top and then walk down to the parking area for having breakfast and coffee break. Around 08.00 a.m leaving Paltuding then further driving to Bromo. Arrive at the hotel at Bromo if your time is possible you can see the sunset from your hotel view point (100 meters walk). Free program and enjoy the night.

Day 3 (Bromo – Ranu Pane)

1. When is the best season trekking to Mount Semeru?
The best season to do trekking at Semeru is starting from July – Oktober. The National Park usually closed for Semeru trekking  from November until the end of March (wet season) or because of some particularly conditions.

2. What is the difficulty level of the trek?
Semeru Mountain is considered to have a heavy terrain compared to Mount Rinjani when it reaches the last gate towards the summit. The rocky and sandy terrain is a challenge for climbers to reach the top. Porters will be provided throughout the climb but you are expected to carry your own personal day pack of less than 5 kilograms (e.g. water and meals). Along the way from Ranu Pane to Semeru, it takes around 8-9 hours. For climbers who choose to save energy can stop at each shelter that is available along the trek. No need special climbing techniques to reach the summit of Semeru. 

3. Is it possible to complete the trek 2D1N? 
Yes, it is doable. But it is recommended only for strong trekkers. Once do trekking you are not stopping at Ranu Kumbolo Lake but direct to Kalimati campsite. Trekking embarks at midnight 12.00 a.m towards the summit via Arcopodo.

4. What is the temperature like in the mountains?
The temperature in the day is around 5 – 20 degree Celsius from Ranu Pane to Ranu Kumbolo lake. In Kalimati At night, the temperature drop is usually below 5 degree Celsius. At times, it can drop to below zero (-0) degree Celsius especially towards the summit. When it is dry season sometime a little snow we can see on the summit.

5. Are toilets available along the trek?
The toilet is available at Ranu Pane Checkpoint. Along the trek there is no toilet available except “Natural toilet”. Bring enough water and toilet paper in your day pack just in case.

6. What clothes should l wear for the trek?
Should better wearing a quick dry synthetic material shirt (can be either short or long sleeve – will be sweating) as the base layer, a thick wind proof jacket as the outer layer, raincoat is just in case. A waterproof and windproof trekking pants is desirable and a pair of gloves, scarf for additional cold protection.

7. What types of footwear are recommended for the trek?
You can bring a pair of shoes or two pairs of shoes; you can wear a flat shoes along the trek from Ranu Pane – Kalimati, then from Kalimati – Summit wear mountain gear shoes is preferable.

8. Do I need a hiking stick along the trek?
From Ranu Pane – Kalimati Campsite you do not need a hiking stick and its easy trek. A hiking stick is highly recommended for the summit climb as the terrain towards the summit is very steep, rocky and consists of very fine – loose volcanic sand that may cause one to slip down easily and hard to walk.

 9. How much drink water do I need to bring?
Prepare how much bottle of water do you need for 8-9 hours trekking. Generally each people is allocated to 3 liters of drinking water (mineral water bottle). The bulk of water will be carried by porter direct to Kalimati campsite. 

10. Do I need special equipment to climb Mount Semeru?
As mention before you need some proper equipment such as torch light / head lamp, sun glasses, climb stick, carbine (just in case).

11. How much tips is appropriate for the guide and porters?
We suggest for a ballpark figure would be around IDR 350K to the guide and around IDR 150K to each porter for the whole group. 

12. What is the health check up about?
The heath check-up consists of some health questionnaire, weight and height, and blood pressure measurement. The fee for the health check-up will be included in our package price. This will be done on day 1 at Tumpang. This check-up is required by the National Park for all climbers who visit Mount Semeru.

13. Is travel insurance provided in the package?
Travel insurance is not included in the tour package. We strongly recommend to all visitors to procure their own travel insurance before embarking on the Mount Semeru trekking.

14. Is it possible to arrange the trip extension to other place interest after Semeru? 
Surely yes it is possible, we can arrange and organize the trip extension to another place interest like Mt. Bromo, Ijen, Banyuwangi City or Malang. Let us know your preferences and we would be happy to provide you with your personalized itinerary.
